Bonded Pairs… More to Love!

Testimonial of a cat adopted as part of a bonded pair:

Often it’s said that we cats are, in general, pretty solitary and independent creatures even with our human friends. That we’re sometimes the kings (or queens!) of the castle at home. That we’re nothing like our canine comrades who are “man’s best friend”, as the saying goes. And it’s not wrong, but it’s also not true!

Although some cats I know fit that independent description, I want to tell you about another type of cat. Did you know that many kitties love having a kitty friend at home? This relationship can help us blossom through fun kitty adventures and a strong bond. And of course, we like to share all this with our humans too!

There are plenty of reasons to adopt two cats together. Especially if separating me from my kitty partner (a sibling, or a lifelong mentor) through adoption might make me sad since we’ve already bonded so closely and maybe leaned on each other through some tough times.

I was adopted along with my little brother. We had been abandoned together outside before being taken in by a lovely refuge. The refuge made sure we got the medical care we needed to ensure our wellbeing with every step of this journey! My brother and I made it through these tough times by sticking together and relying on each other.

The refuge made sure we were adopted together as a bonded pair, and since then we are so happy to be together and share lots of love with our new human family.

And we bring double the love to our humans too!

Here are some reasons why adopting us together made this transition easier for us and our adoptive family:

  1. Better adaptation - being a pair with my brother means it was much easier for us to get used to a new environment when our adoptive family brought us home! When I was scared, knowing my brother was with me made me brave enough to explore our new home. I love knowing that he’s always there to help me conquer my fears!

  1. Easier sociability - with my brother, it’s easier for me to understand how to follow the kitty code of conduct. I can always follow his example if I'm not sure what to do.

  1. More time for play - even when our human family isn’t home, and despite all the lovely gifts they’ve given us (cat trees, toys, beds, etc), nothing beats playtime with my brother for having fun and venturing out of our comfort zone! We like to run, chase each other, and sometimes a friendly fight to see who gets to play with the favourite toy.

  1. Better company - I’m never lonely. I love knowing that my brother is close by and ready to play or nap with me if I'm anxious when our family isn’t home.

  1. Better physical and mental health - living with my brother means that I’m active and occupied all day. This helps make sure that I don’t become too idle which can lead to obesity, stress, or sadness for a cat like me.

  1. Double the love - my brother and I give our humans double the love, cuddles, fun, and laughter! I love to cuddle with my humans at nighttime when they go to sleep, but my brother prefers early morning snuggles!

  1. Double the rescue - of course! Adopting a bonding pair means saving double the lives and we are doubly grateful.

I know that there’s lots to consider when it comes to adopting a bonded pair like me and my brother: the cost of our regular needs like food and litter, check-ups with the vet to make sure we’re in tip-top shape, making sure you have enough space for us to explore and blossom, and enough time to share with each of us individually too.

But this choice, once you’ve carefully considered it, means that my little brother and I get to spend our days together. We’re so grateful and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for adopting us as a pair to ensure we have the purr-fect chance to be our best kitty selves.

Our motto is: bonded pairs… more to love!
