What is feline AIDS (FIV+)?
In short, it’s the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which weakens a cat’s immune system. Although the virus is similar to HIV/AIDS in humans, the disease is less severe and rarely threatens the animal’s life!

A cat with FIV has a life expectancy similar to that of an uninfected cat. However, it’s important to make sure their vaccinations are up to date!
Furthermore, cats cannot transmit the disease to humans or other types of animals. FIV is therefore spread primarily through direct contact: through deep bites.

Likewise, a pregnant mother infected with the virus can transmit it to her kittens, either during birth or while nursing them.
Reproduction itself, however, is not a route of FIV transmission—unlike HIV, which affects humans!

- A cat can carry FIV its entire life without the disease ever manifesting
- The virus does not infect humans or other animals
- The virus is not easily transmitted from one cat to another
(only through deep bites or, occasionally, via the mother’s placenta or while nursing)

THE VIRUS DOES NOT SPREAD:
- Through sharing food and water bowls
- Through play between cats
- In the litter box
- During grooming (brushing)
- If the cat sneezes
